Your First Steps with Jesus

Now that you have accepted Christ into your life, you must understand that the Christian experience was meant to be lived in the company of others.

This is not to suggest, however, that there is not an intimate aspect to the Christian life. John 15 will begin by focusing upon the intensely personal nature of our relationship with Jesus Christ. Then, the chapter will close with a glimpse into the equally intimate relationship that we experience with the Holy Spirit. Our relation to these two members of the Christian Godhead has an intensely personal and private aspect.

Please take time to study the four relationships described by Jesus. This will help us to see more clearly what it really means to follow after Christ.

  • Our Relationship with Jesus Christ (John 15:1-11)
  • Our Relationship with Jesus' Friends (John 15:12-17)
  • Our Relationship with Jesus' Foes (John 15:18-25)
  • Our Relationship with Jesus' Spirit (John 15:26-27)
  •

Here are some simple steps that will directly influence your ability to follow Jesus Christ.

Make a daily commitment to pursue the path of Christ. Devote at least 30 uninterrupted minutes of every day to Bible study and prayer. Let this be your appointment with Jesus Christ. Find a private place. Read a chapter or two of the New Testament and record your reflections in a notebook or journal. Apply what you learn. Talk to the Lord. Tell Him your troubles. Seek His forgiveness for your sins. Ask for His guidance and instruction for your path. Obey His voice. Learn to know and love Jesus Christ.
Make a weekly commitment to meet with other followers of Christ. The community of Christians can help you make the journey. God did not design the road to Heaven to be traveled solo. Venture beyond the virtual world of computers, and your private world of devotion, and continue the journey. Follow after Christ—hand in hand and heart to heart with His friends.
Look for regular opportunities to reveal the love of Christ to those around you. Start with your family and friends. Share with them what Christ means to you. Take another Christian with you. When you encounter opposition because you follow Christ, always regard it as an opportunity to explain why you follow Jesus. Take no offense at opposition and anger. Be certain that your reaction is always loving and encouraging.
Develop a moment-by-moment sensitivity to the inner voice of the Spirit. In everything that you do, listen for His warnings and promptings. Immediately confess any impure thought or actions. Take advantage of every opportunity He points out. Obey what He tells you to do. Remember that He is your constant companion. He will guide you in Jesus' ways. He is the real secret of your success in following after Christ.

So then, on with the journey! May you find true peace and everlasting joy in following Jesus!
